The Wisdom of the Ring: Reflections on Impermanence

The story goes that King Solomon asked his wise men to create a ring with an inscription that would help him keep perspective in times of joy and sorrow. They gave him a ring with the inscription "This too shall pass." These simple words hold a deep wisdom that we can apply to our daily lives.

In life, nothing is permanent, neither good nor bad. Being aware of the impermanence of things and emotions will help us enjoy more and suffer less. By accepting that everything changes, we can learn to appreciate the present and make more objective decisions.

Objectivity in Decision Making

When we see a high-level executive making a difficult decision, we assume they don't have feelings because we couldn't have made such a choice ourselves. However, the reality is that everyone has feelings. It's just their job, and as such, they need to have good emotional management that allows them to separate the emotional part from making more objective decisions.

One of them once told me: "Of course, it saddens us, and of course, we get depressed, but we can't stay depressed forever because we have many people who depend on our strength." This applies even in the family, when you deny your children some permission. In their eyes, you're a parent without feelings because they don't understand. However, that's your job: making objective decisions.

The Impermanence of Positive Feelings

This also applies to positive feelings. For example, it's hard to see a businessman doing business with a family member, as positive feelings can cloud their judgment and lead them to accept a bad deal simply because of the love they have for their family member.

The Illusion of Happiness

In life, the feeling of happiness can give us an illusion that everything will stay the same. In times of prosperity, we spend everything instead of saving, thinking that income will always come. We postpone that coffee with a friend because we think they'll be there tomorrow. We start a business based on the success of a single event, assuming it will always be the same, and we look down on those in a lower economic situation, without thinking that tomorrow we could lose everything and that person could be the one who helps us.

Conclusion

In summary, awareness of the transience of things will help us see things more objectively and make better decisions. By accepting that everything changes, we can learn to appreciate the present and live more fully. Remember that happiness and sadness are transient, and objectivity is key to making decisions that benefit us in the long run.
