The Unexpected Opportunity Cost - Chapter 1: The Bank of Peace

Imagen
Chapter 1: The Bank of Peace Don Elías never missed his 4 PM appointment with "T he Bank of Peace ," the affectionate name he had given to his favorite bench in the Central Park. It was simply the perfect spot to enjoy a good book and breathe fresh air, all while watching the afternoon drift by, just before sunset. During this time, the worn wooden bench became his refuge, a tranquil vantage point from which he observed the city's frantic comings and goings, allowing him to disconnect from the daily routine of his home. For Don Elías, reading was a fantastic means for reflection, travel, and personal growth. A book was more than just paper; it represented the opportunity to live many lives, where the aches and pains of old age didn't matter, and where there was always a world of possibilities, even at his advanced age. Since he began his reading trips to his cherished "Bank of Peace," he knew that the tranquility afforded by solitude often goes hand-in-hand ...

Mindfulness in the Classroom

Imagen
I have always enjoyed the process of teaching, as it allows me to transfer knowledge and spark growth in individuals. Seeing the potential of students before they see it themselves and then watching them surpass it, sometimes even surpassing me, fills me with joy. The teaching process is a bidirectional cycle, where the teacher learns every day. Not only when preparing what to teach and anticipating student doubts, but also in the moment of teaching. Although I hadn't had the opportunity to teach a formal class, I had given courses and explained topics to my teams, acting more as a guide showing the right direction and motivating learners to explore on their own. In this mentorship process, it's essential to listen to the results of each attempt and help the student understand why they failed, without telling them how to do it. After a few iterations, students return with the news that they've achieved their goal, and often their strategy is better than mine. This has taugh...

Imagen
I remember a time when que I found myself completely overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. It was then that I discovered the philosophy of Stoicism and its focus on virtue and wisdom. I realized that I could apply Stoic principles in my daily life to better manage challenges and emotions. What is Stoicism? The term "Stoic" refers to a school of philosophical thought that originated in ancient Greece and was developed in Rome. Stoicism is a current that seeks virtue and wisdom through reason and self-discipline. In simpler terms, being Stoic means learning to manage feelings and make decisions based on reason and one's own virtues, such as wisdom, justice, fortitude, and temperance. An Example of Applying Stoicism Imagine someone insults you in public. Even if you're Stoic, you'll feel anger or annoyance. However, instead of reacting impulsively, you'll take a moment to reflect on the situation, evaluate whether it's worth responding, and then decide whether t...

The Gamer Philosophy: 10 Lessons to Enjoy Life

Imagen
Until a few years ago, being a gamer was synonymous with wasting time. However, today we know that there are countless benefits for those who play video games, such as a type of mental gym. But what about the philosophy itself that video games inherently convey? Video games were born from board games, which were always a form of socialization, strategy, and challenges. It's logical that video games have built upon this foundation, but what's most important is that they constructed upon it. In video games, an average character can develop their potential by facing challenges, making difficult decisions, and overcoming obstacles. Sometimes, you have to try hundreds of times until you succeed, but you always have the ability to decide whether to continue or move on. There are even video games with different endings depending on the decisions we make, like "Before Your Eyes", where time advances if we blink. Some games may seem impossible due to not aligning with our skil...

The Moment to Ascend: Signs You're Ready for the Next Level

Imagen
A common denominator when interviewing a student for their first job as a professional or intern is that they dream of being in leadership positions; team leaders, managers, directors, presidents. Many people say it takes years, and to a large extent, it's true, but not because it has to be that way. Normally, the skills needed for those positions need to mature, and that's the result of an investment in time and constant practice. However, it's naive to think that we can move to the next level until those skills have fully matured, since experience usually results from application. So, we can only learn by being in the position. It's said that every time you ascend in the corporate ladder, you face challenges for which you're not prepared and have responsibilities beyond your current capabilities. And this is precisely because you've never done it before. No one has been a team leader until they are for the first time, so real experience begins on day 1. So, ho...

The 20-Second Rule: How Small Changes Can Help You Reach Your Goals

Imagen
Have you ever wondered why it's so hard to achieve your goals? The answer may lie in the way our minds make decisions. In this article, we'll explore the 20-second rule and how it can help you reach your objectives. The Mind and Effort Our minds tend to choose options that require less effort. This is known as the law of least resistance. If we have two options and one requires less than 20 seconds of effort, we're likely to choose that one. Examples and Applications Phone vs. book: If you want to read more and use your phone less, place the book next to your bed or sofa and the phone in a more distant location. Phone vs.  Exercise:  If you want to exercise in the morning instead of scrolling through your phone, lay out your workout gear the night before and keep your phone out of reach. Diet: Buy healthy food and prepare healthy snack options a day in advance. Avoid buying junk food and uninstall food delivery apps. Benefits of Applying the 20-Second Rule Applying the 20-...
