The Illusion of Ownership: Everything You Have is Borrowed
Today, it's extremely easy to believe that we own and possess everything that is part of our lives. It's easy to get lost in the sea of information, pressure, and urgency for perfection, giving us the false impression that every single result of our efforts belongs to us.
Nothing could be further from the truth. It's enough to understand that the pronoun "my" implies possession and, therefore, that we own everything that follows. My wife, my house, my car, my title, my money, my gadgets... This false sense of ownership is even accentuated by all media and social networks.
This is the article of the moment, unique and everyone wants it; buy it and stand out from the rest, even if it does the same thing as one that's 90% cheaper but has a better camera that you don't even know how to use.
Be your best version! Everything is just a click away, and if you don't do it, you're wasting your life; take the opportunity and stand out from the rest.
We see countless ads like these every day, and little by little, they become ingrained in our minds, so when we finally get said benefit, it gives us immense pleasure to say "it's my object" or "it's my new position".
But sometimes, reality hits, and you discover that everything is borrowed. Your company is no longer your company, you're reminded that it wasn't a family relationship, but a work relationship, and you're no longer necessary. The one who was once your position becomes someone else's. The one who was once your salary becomes someone else's, and your savings become someone's payment for goods or services, and you wonder: was it really mine?
Enjoy the moments
The answer is no, it never was yours. That's why it's essential to enjoy the moments. It's not about stopping striving to be better or giving ourselves some pleasure for our efforts, but about giving value to what we're lent. How many times did you buy that article you dreamed of and, like a small child, took it out of its package with so much excitement, only to leave it in a corner for the rest of the time?
How many times did you buy the most expensive phone because it had the best camera, and you never learned to use all its functions?
The most important thing is that this applies not only to professional life but also to personal life.
Your partner is also borrowed; if you don't give them the attention they deserve and enjoy them, one day they'll cease to be yours, either because they'll be with someone else or because their time in this life will simply come to an end.
The same goes for our children and everything around us.
Advice:
- Be grateful for what you have instead of focusing on what you don't have.
- Enjoy the moments with the people and things around you.
- Don't cling to material things, as they can be taken away at any moment.
Once you understand that everything you've obtained is borrowed, you'll be able to enjoy it more, including the problems. There are few things that motivate thought, creativity, or reflection like problems. It's worth taking advantage of the teaching and growth that comes with them while they're present in our lives.
