The Unexpected Opportunity Cost - Chapter 6: The Invisible North

Chapter 6: The Invisible North

By Sergio Cano | Bitacorastudios - La vida real profesiones

The vibrant colors of April's flowers gave way to the fruits born from them. Much like in nature, a seed was germinating within the young man—a seed with the potential to transform his surroundings, the kind that grows to shelter those seeking refuge from the rain or support under the scorching sun.

Don Elías, like an expert gardener who knows the importance of nutrients, knew this was a critical moment. A fruit's outcome depends on its conditions: a malnourished seed dies before maturing; one in an alkaline environment turns bitter if the acidity isn't neutralized; and one that grows in the shadow of a larger tree ends up smaller than its genetics would allow. It was essential to identify the precise moment to pull the youth out of the shade and face the world on his own, receiving the sun's rays directly. Thanks to Aurelio's file, that moment had arrived during their previous encounter. Now it would be up to him to harness that light or be consumed by its power.

As he walked toward his bench, Elías noticed once again the absence of the girl from the fountain. He couldn't help but feel his heart tighten with worry. Reaching his spot, he placed an old planner, still in its packaging, and a sturdy pen tied with a bow faded by time upon the wood. It was a gift that had remained untouched for decades—a postponed dream his wife had given him, hoping that one day Elías would stop managing the present and start writing the future. He picked up his book, more out of habit than desire; what truly mattered to him now wasn't reading, but seeing the young man.

Elías used to look at the book from the side to measure the progress of the pages. He was doing just that when he heard a voice:

—"What are you looking at so closely, old man?"

Elías set his gaze on him. —"I'm looking at the progress," he answered. "I'm convincing myself that I’ll make it to the last page." —"Well, you should have picked a shorter one," the youth nodded. —"It's just that this one was the most interesting," Elías replied, aware that the young man did not understand he wasn't talking about the object made of paper. "You look different today, you know? I notice a certain spark in your eyes."

—"You're crazy, old man," the youth said, a proud smile breaking across his face. "But you're right. I've spent the whole week feeling the energy of the entire world right here, in my gut."

The young man sat down, a new urgency in his words: —"After our last talk, I thought about what to do with the money. I know I want to help, just like you did for me, but I didn't know how. I thought about being an anchor for the people who feel adrift in this park. But a hundred pesos isn't much, so I spoke with the shop owner; I asked permission to sell small boxes of gum there. I told him my plan, and he agreed."

He paused, excited. —"I was going to the candy store, but then I saw the girl from the fountain. Her gum is more expensive, but if I bought it from her, I’d be giving her time to do something else with her life. We reached an agreement: she gives me her boxes, and I sell them in the shop with a one-peso profit for 'the project.' I was honest with the customers; I put up a sign explaining that these are 'gum with a purpose.' Every day I give the profit to the girl... and thanks to that, she was able to go back to school."

Don Elías, behind his old sea-dog shell, felt his eyes mist over. He finally understood why the girl was gone, and the young man's nobility disarmed him.

—"What you felt in your 'gut' is the discovery of a purpose," Elías said firmly. "But a purpose without a path is a ship without a compass. What you did by putting it into words is called a Mission. By projecting what you want to achieve, you gave life to your Vision. And by seeking the exact steps to reach it, you outlined your Objectives. Without knowing it, you have perfectly followed the foundations that forge the bedrock of the greatest companies."

The young man, his heart swelling with pride, looked him in the eyes. —"You don't know how happy it makes me to hear you say that. I think... I'm ready to tell you my name. My name is Mateo."

Elías broke into a smile and, with eyes still damp, shook the young man's hand, sealing the pact between mentor and apprentice. —"Allow me to return such a grateful gift with my own: I am Elías."

In that instant, both knew their lives would never be the same. Don Elías pulled out the worn wallet Mateo knew by heart and retrieved his hundred pesos. —"I have so much faith in the success of your enterprise, Mateo, that these hundred pesos are now my investment as your strategic partner."

Later, at Fermín's grave, Elías sat down and carefully placed the box of cigars on his lap.

—"You know, Fermín, the boy has met every piece of advice with the blind faith of a castaway clinging to a branch in a storm. Every morning I ask myself to be worthy of such trust. I strive to be that branch that carries him to shore. What he doesn't realize is that he is the one doing me the favor, giving one last dream to this old man before his candle goes out."

Elías sighed, feeling the weight of the box. —"The time has come to light the second cigar, my friend. And I couldn't think of better company than yours. Enjoy your victory with me, for you were the one who sowed this idea in my memory. They say the best gift anyone can give is something to think about... and you left this thought pinned to my soul."

He lit the tobacco. The smoke rose, and the aroma filled the silence of the cemetery. He closed his eyes, savoring that flavor kept for decades, imprinting the moment in his memory.

—"He finally told me his name: Mateo. A perfect name, don't you think? It evokes humility, yet serves as a bridge between the forgotten and the leaders. A gift from God... and to me, he is. The little nudge I needed to make it to the end."

Finished with the cigar, Elías closed the box with a solemn gesture, like someone turning the most crucial page of a book. He coughed with difficulty a couple of times, adjusted his coat, and, with a new peace in his chest, began the walk back home.

🚀 Next Steps in Leadership

1. From Purpose to Action: The Power of Personal Mission

In today’s lesson, Mateo proves that intention isn't enough without structure. Elías translates the young man’s gut feeling of "wanting to help" into strategic terms: Mission, Vision, and Objectives. This week, analyze that project you have in mind: Is it just an emotion in your "gut," or does it have a clear compass? Remember: A purpose without a path is a ship without a compass.

2. The Legacy: A Story Worth Writing

Get ready for our next installment. In Chapter 7, we will see a different side of Don Elías. The book he always used to read will give way to an old planner and a pen that have waited decades in the dark. The mentor will begin to write the story he finally deemed "worthy" of being recorded. What secrets does that planner hold, and what does it mean for Mateo’s future? We will find out soon at the Bank of Peace..
